Calliope: Burrowing Owl Wine’s Kid Sister.

Calliope: Burrowing Owl Wine’s Kid Sister.

Posted by Joseph Richard Group on 14 Apr 2014 / 0 Comment

The Wyse Family – founders of Burrowing Owl Estate Winery in Oliver BC – is proud to introduce a line up of wines under a new label:Calliope. Pronounced ka-LIE-oh-pee, this captivating name pays homage to a tiny hummingbird which is found in southern British Columbia and is Canada’s smallest bird. The word Calliope is of Greek origin meaning ‘beautiful voice’ and was chosen by the Wyse family in recognition of their interest in birds and music. Calliope is also the Greek Muse of Eloquence and Poetry.

Grapes for Calliope wines are carefully sourced from local vineyards in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. Winemakers are granted the freedom to escape from tradition and utilize their creative talents to find new frontiers, explore new taste profiles and create delightful, expressive, fresh characteristics in each varietal or blend. With a focus on early consumption, oak applications are minimized and closures are typically screw caps for convenience. Calliope wines are designed to pair with casual lunches on the patio, or with contemporary cuisine. This line of wines will complement one’s own Burrowing Owl collection, as they are made with the same commitment to flavour and quality.

Currently, Calliope wines are only available in retail stores in B.C. and Alberta, in the Sonora Room Restaurant at Burrowing Owl, and in select restaurant locations throughout BC during special promotions. (Description from the Calliope website).

The Figure Eight white pairs phenomenally with edamame, seaweed, and other savoury sushi treats.

Try the Figure Eight blush on it’s own or with some brie cheese and earthy crackers.

Pair the Figure Eight red with thyme, honey, and lemon bbq’d chicken, or salted caramel ice cream.
